WUTTUP!!!
This weekend was really dope! I love it when you don't really gas yourself up on something and it ends up being really fun. Case in point- this entire weekend. Friday night I had plans to track some female vocals at the crib for Rome's project (out May 12) with a friend of ours, Sarah, who's got a GREAT voice. For some reason we weren't able to capture the emotion that the particular record needs so I'm gonna definitely have her come back in sometime this week, maybe even tomorrow night. Just about when I was beginning to show my frustration with the way the session was going, Lulu and Flaco came by the house and definitely saved the situation from turning sour. I don't ever want to be the producer or engineer who turns into a jerk when sessions go away from plan, so it was a good thing they showed up when they did . . . as my patience was running really thin. The funny thing is that I KNOW this particular voice is the voice I want to hear on these records, and I also know that she is very capable of doing it for us. . . she just needs to come into the session comfortable and ready to work, as opposed to coming in with a million things on her mind and a limited amount of time to get finished. I like to go into sessions with litterally all night on my hands, so that if I have to be working on a record until the next morning then so be it. When you go in with a ton of things on your mind, and somewhere to be in 3 hours, your head is nowhere near the place it needs to be in order to give a solid performance. So Lu and Flaco pretty much saved the day. When they pulled up to the house they were listening to the Omar Cruz album that Interscope is sleeping on. . . "Sign of the Cruz". Of course I had to take it inside and give my pops the exclusive listening session hahaha . . . One of the records in particular will always be a standout to me because it features the excellent mariachi style singing voice of my homie Chris, whom I've known for some time now through Martin. Yes. . . one of the neighborhood kids is on Omar's album lol. . . call me the HOOD A&R lol . . .Thats a story in itself that I'm sure we'll get to touch on later when the album gets a finalized release date. Lulu, Flaco and I must have sat in my room and talked about business and all things BYI for about 2 hours. Crazy. . . as I told them while they were there, 3 years ago I would have never imagined that I would be remotely connected to this team. After the long talk, we headed out to North Hollywood to catch some Thai food, which was interesting on its own lol. . . Lulu was sending Dj Skee emails with pictures of our food attached, joking with the fact that Skee had spent the majority of his week in China eating burritos and we were back home eating noodles. We called it a night at about 5am, if that makes any sense.
Saturday- "Welcome to China" party at Yvettes crib for her cousin Sonia's 30th Birthday. Had a blast. . . Martin, Oly and G-lo came by after hours . . . good times. A few people were dressed to fit the occasion in Chinese gowns, but most of the people there kept it to a minimum. Heineken, White Zinfandel, Patron. . . we were good. Someone was smoking some really bad smelling weed back there though. These kids need a lesson on what it is to burn quality greens. They had the decorations ON POINT though! Chinese stuff everywhere. . .from the appetizer table to the streamers and stuff on the walls. . . they did it up really cool. Sunday. . . woke up feeling like a milli. Ran around all day with Yve. From Jamba Juice in the morning, to a bunch of quick stops at different events and gatherings all throughout the day, it didn't quite finish up til about sundown.
Today- Back to work. Gotta get these vocals done by at least Wednesday. Thats the goal. We'll see what happens.
